Malawi is a small country in South East Africa about the size of Pennsylvania.
Established in 1891, the British protectorate of Nyasaland became the independent nation of Malawi in 1964. After three decades of one-party rule under President Hastings Kamuzu BANDA the country held multiparty elections in 1994, under a provisional constitution that came into full effect the following year. The current president is Joyce Banda.
Chichewa is the official language. Several other languages are also utilized in different regions. English is spoken as well.
Lake Malawi contains more species of fish than any other in the world.
Malawi has an agricultural economy with about 80% of the population living in rural areas. Agriculture, which has benefited from fertilizer subsidies since 2006, accounts for one-third of GDP and 90% of export revenues. Tobacco is a main crop which accounts for over half of their exports and is a leading cause to deforestation in the country. Maize is another staple crop as it is used as their main food source.
